AB  - Deregulation is radically altering the utilities landscape, creating opportunities among the giant monopolies for newcomers to provide select products and services to the industry. These include new technologies such as meter reading and energy information systems; consulting services to incumbent utility companies; and out-sourcing of non-core operations. The causes, course, and both actual and likely outcomes of deregulation are enlightening elements in investors' determination of how to enter this sector, and much can be learned from the experiences of many who have already done so.
