This sector, though out of favor in recent years, offers significant opportunities to astute investors. Yet there are numerous consequential factors which must be heeded, and a broad understanding of the environment in which any given healthcare company operates is critical. Among the factors addressed in this article are the legislative and regulatory issues to be considered, the size of and competition within any given market, and the scientific and cultural acceptability, as well as reimbursement potential, of the treatment or technology. To be successful, a healthcare investor must go significantly beyond the traditional risk/reward model and understand the complex of factors that shape this unique arena.
